Access to thesuction valve is obtained by removingdoor 14, and to the delivery valve byremoving the air vessel. A bilge pump, 15, of the same size and design, isplaced at the other end of the bedplateand similarly operated. The bedplate is cast in one piece, withsuit-able flanges for bolting down to theseating in the ship, and is provided withmachined recesses to receive the mainbearing bushes. The main bearing caps, 16, Fig. 1, are readily accessible for re-moval, and when removed the bushes, 17,which are made eccentric to the shaft ontheir outer diameter, can easily beslipped from under the shaft withoutdisturbing any gear whatever. Thebushes are of Admiralty quality gun-metal with white metal lining. Crank Shaft and Rods The crankshaft is a solid forging ofSiemens-Martin steel and is machinedall over. Large balance-weights, 18, , are secured to the crank-webs, andthese not only g
