Troy class sailing boats in River Fowey estuary heads out to sea past Polruan.

The ‘Troy’ class of small sailing boats were designed in the 1920’s by Archie Watty specifically for racing in the harbour at Fowey in Cornwall, England. These 18’ wooden day boats have tall rigs to catch the wind from the hills surrounding the estuary. The first two boats were launched in 1929. Of the 26 boats built since 1929, 23 are still in racing condition. Some sail in the estuary on Wednesday evenings. Class rules state that Troys must be built on the Fowey Estuary, and forbid the use of metal spars.
