Brightfield photomicrograph (one of a sequence) of Picrite basalt
Images; picrite_IMG_0054, picrite_IMG_0055, picrite_IMG_0056, picrite_IMG_0057 show this slide at different points of extinction using cross polarized illumination (picrite_IMG_0057, the palest lacking any colour has no polarization applied and is how it appears using normal brightfield illumination). Picrite basalt is a variety of high magnesium olivine basalt that is very rich in the mineral olivine.
