Town Hall, Dalton Square, Lancaster, Lancashire, c1955-c1980. A view of the front elevation of the Town Hall, designed by Edward Montford and built between 1906 and 1909, with the gardens and Queen Victoria Memorial in the foreground, showing the portico over the entrance with figurative sculpture in the pediment, supported by six Ionic columns. The scuplture scene is of a seated King Edward VII with sceptre and orb, but it is not very clear in the image. The north front is two storeys above a basement, and has a balustrade parapet across the roof. Above the portico is a clock tower supported by tuscan columns, topped with a ribbed dome roof with Queen Victoria Memorial, by Herbert Hampton, was erected in 1906 The statue has a Portland stone base with bronze relief of prominent figure in Victorian society, and representations of Wisdom, Truth, Liberty and Justice. Seated lions are positioned at each corner, and standing on the top of the plinth, is the figure of Queen Victoria. The statue is seen fom behind, and shows the inscription on the back of the plinth which reads: "GIVEN TO HIS NATIVE TOWN BY LORD ASHTON AD 1906".
