Nothwithstanding,Ave had a sufficient rain to moisten the soil, which is quite en-couraging to us. PIONEERING THE WEST 105 This valley is bounded by liii>h mountains, some of themcovered with snow, and from what knowledge we have of it atpresent, this is the most safe and secure place the Saints couldpossibly locate themselves in. Nature has fortified this placeon , with only a few narrow passes, which could bemade impregnable without much difficulty. The scarcity oftimber has probably been the reason that this beautiful valleyJias not been settled long since by the Gentiles. But I thinkwe can find sufficient timber up the creeks for present purposes, and also coal in the mountains. The saints have reason torejoice, and thank the Lord for this goodly land unpopulatedby the Result of This First Start of Irrigation. Smith and E. spoke on different subjects and gave some general in-structions. After meeting Brother Kimball gave me a list of}iames of persons which he wished me to notify, and have themretire to a grove a short distance from the camp. The follow-ing is a list of the names: William King, Hosea Gushing, Orson 106 PIONEERING THE WEST Whipple, George Billings, Thomas Clowarcl, Robert Biard, CarlosMurray, Orson K. Whitney, Hans C.
