Delorme, Pierre Claude François (Called Pierre Delorme) - Scene taken from Canto V of Hell in Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, narrating the tragic loves of Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini. In a room lit by an oil lamp, Francesca and Paolo are surprised by Gianciotto Malatesta who is about to stab them with his sword. Condemned to wander in Hell, they symbolize, more than the fault of incestuous adultery, the strength of their eternal love.
