Now the Methodists were leftwithout any adequate provision for the baptism of their chil-dren and their converts, and for the Lords Supper. Theylooked to Wesley as their father, responsible for callingthem into Christian fellowship. They appealed to himthrough Asbury for guidance. In 1779 their preachers inthe South proposed that three of their number should ordainthe rest, but Asbury persuaded them to await Wesleys de-cision. The crisis was reached in 1
