There are more thaneighteen hundred of these islands, many of them but a few feet of granite rock,or with but a single tree laving its branches in the cool waters, and others of athousand acres in area. Some are bare, some verdant and grass-grown, othersthickly umbrageous with forest trees, and shelving beaches of sand or shingle,alternate with precipitous cliffs rising sheer from the channel.
