Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka - 9 February 2014 The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, containing revered Buddhist relics, is located in Anuradhapura, the ancient capital of Sri Lanka. Built in 140 BCE, this is one of the largest and most important Buddhist shrines in the world. Here we see a line of elephants guarding the walls around the main stupa. This animal is, of course, revered in Sri Lanka.
