Counts of 14 clutches varied between 14 and 67 eggs (median 41). implying multiple clutches by individual females as Pyburn (1970) found for A. callidryas and A. dacnicolor. One leaf 30 x 11 cm taken from near the center of egg mass con- centration had 533 eggs on the upper surface and 83 on the lower surface—a total of 616 eggs on one leaf. Thus, the total number of eggs in the breeding area is impressively large. On the morning of August 11. many of the egg masses that had been present the day before had been scraped off of the leaves and in some cases new egg masses had been put in their place. The ground and water under the trees were strewn with fragments of egg masses with unhatched eggs. Eggs submerged in water invariably fail to hatch (Pyburn. 1970). There were almost sureh fewer total eggs in the trees on August 1 1 than there were on August 10. We believe that most of the egg loss was from A. spurrelli males scraping them off of the leaves rather than loss to predators. Although there were no frogs in the trees morning of August 12. there were a number of fresh egg masses from the night Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Southern California Academy of Sciences.
