John Brown was a prominent abolitionist who led an assault on the Harpers Ferry armory in 1859 which ultimately led to the start of the American Civil War. John Brown was captured in this building and executed a few weeks later. Harpers Ferry (sometimes spelt Harper's Ferry) is situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the states of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia meet.
