The engine represented the ideasof an English engineer as to the bestform of locomotive for handling heavyfast passenger trains. It was designedby a Mr. Winby, of London, and wasbuilt by Hawthorn, Lester & Co., New-castle, England. That the engine was radically dif-ferent from the ordinary locomotive■was apparent to the most casual ob-server; yet there were many noveltiesabout the machine that could be foundonly after laborious Toobtain high speed and great powercombined, two pairs of driving ins. diameter, were employed, andeach pair was driven by a pair of sep-arate cylinders, the front drivers beingdriven by inside cylinders located un-der the smoke box, and the back driv-ers by outside cylinders set outside, back of the leading truck. The insidecylinders were 17 x 22 ins., and theoutside cylinders 12^ x 24 ins. Astri
