Their hatred was increasedby his energetic exertions in suppress-ing the Regulator movement (see Regu-lators). He fled to New York with Gov-ernor Tryon to avoid the consequences ofpopular indignation. He was appointedsurveyor-general of North Carolina in1774. In 1776 he raised and led a force<alled the Kings American Regiment ofFoot. After the Revolution he went toNova Scotia, where he became a council-lor and lieutenant-governor in September,. EDMUND FANNING. 1783, and from 1786 to 1805 was governorof Prince Edwards Island. He rose to therank of general in the British army in1808. Fanning was an able jurist, andalways regretted his later career in NorthCarolina. He was greatly influenced byhis father-in-law. He died in London,Feb. 28, 1818. Fargo, WiLUAM George, expressman;born in Pompey, N. Y., May 20, 1818; be-f-ame the Buflfalo agent of the PomeroyExpress Company in 1843; established thefirst express company west of Buffalo inpartnership with Henry Wells and DanielDunning in 1844. The line wiis extendeduntil it reached San Francisco, Cal. In1868 Mr. Fargo became president of thecorporation, which by the time of his deathhad 2,700 ofTiocs, over . cmploycfs, anda capital of $18,000,000. The city of Fargo, N. D., was named after him.
