Bacterial antibiotic test. View of a petri dish in which bacteria from a urinary infection are undergoing an antibiotic sensitivity test. First a urine sample was smeared across the agar nutrient gel in the petri dish. The gel enables the bacteria in the urine sample to grow. Then seven types of antibiotics (white discs) were added to the petri dish. The antibiotics that have clear areas around them, such as at lower right, are effective at killing off the bacteria and so are the most suitable for treating this bacterial infection.
