Coat of arms decorating the facade of the Sheldonian Theater, in Oxford, England, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. The writing surrounding the coat of arms reads: Honi soit qui mal y pense and is an Anglo-Norman maxim that means, "May he be shamed who thinks badly of it". Its literal translation from Old French is, "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it." The saying's most famous use is as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter. The Sheldonian Theater was built from 1664 to 1668 after a design by Christopher Wren for the University of Oxford. The building is named after Gilbert Sheldon, chancellor of the University at the time and the project's main financial backer. It is used for music concerts, lectures and University ceremonies, but not for drama.
