For some of the new motor cars motors will betaken from present four-motor equipments which the companyhas. It is interesting to note in this connection that for the pastthree years the company has been operating a service terminat-ing at Canal Street during the rush hours, and in this servicetwenty three-car trains have been used. These trains haveconsisted of a motor car with two trailers. In order that thetrain can be operated from either end without switching at theterminals, the motor car is placed at one end of the train witha type-L controller, and in the rear of the trailer at the otherend is a modified type-L controller. By running three wires thelength of the train from the motor car to the rear controller, therear controller can be used to operate the motors either in seriesor parallel. The reversing is accomplished by electro-pneu-. EASTERN ELECTRIC RAILWAY matic control of the reverse cylinder on the motor car con-troller. An air cylinder, controlled by electro-pneumaticvalves, throws the reverse switch of the motor car controllerone way or the other. The circuit controlling these valves isconnected to the reverse switch of the trailer controller. The company has ordered two batteries, one to be placed atForty-Sixth Avenue, on the Garfield Park line, and the otherat Robey Avenue and North Avenue, on the Logan Squareline. Both these batteries are the chloride type, with a capa-city of 1200 amps., discharging at the i-hour rate. Boosterswill be installed in connection with these battery plants, and theobject of the battery is to aid in carrying the morning and even-ing peak loads, which are very high compared to the middayload. The company has three-times the number of cars inservice during the rush hours that it has during the middle ofthe day, and this difference is likely, if anyt
