An artisan with a hand-made loom, Jaiama Nimi Koro, Sierra Leone, 1963.
This image, copied from a 1963 colour slide, was taken in Jaiama Nimi Koro shortly after Sierra Leone had achieved independence (1961) from the United Kingdom. It features a man weaving cloth. After spinning and dyeing, cotton threads are woven into a long strip which is then cut and sewn into a blanket. The blanket may then be used as a blanket or fashioned into a loose fitting 'country cloth' garment worn by men.
