Tasmania Devil Sarcophilus harrisii

The Tasmania Devil only lives in the wild in Tasmania, a southern state in Australia. Once relatively common, devil numbers have plummeted to roughly 20% of their former population due to the rapid spread of a cancer-type viral disease,. The disease called devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is spread through physical contact amongst devils and ultimately kills any devil it affects. The race is on to find a cure for the cancer before this iconic keystone species becomes extinct in the wild.
