View N of the underground strong room in the headquarters building (principia) of the C2ndAD Roman fort at Corbridge, Northumberland, England, UK. The stairs lead down from the shrine (sacellum), the centre of religious life for the garrison. The headquarters building is in the western military compound (Site 11) N of the main street (Stanegate). Corbridge lies a mile S of Hadrian's Wall & began life as a series of forts before the Wall was started in AD 122. It is sited where the Romans crossed the River Tyne & two of their major roads intersect: one of the principal routes into Scotland (Dere Street) & the E-W route connecting the Tyne & the Solway (the Stanegate). By the late C2ndAD Corbridge was developing into a supply depot for Hadrian's Wall & a prosperous Roman town which flourished into the C5thAD.
