A type of towboat called a pusher, pusher boat or pusher tug is used to push cargo barges on the Mississippi River in the USA.

A powerful towboat that is called a pusher, a pusher boat, a pusher tug or a pusher craft is enroute to a tow of lashed-together barges to push their cargos down the Mississippi River, the third longest river in North America. The waterway serves as a major transportation route for commerce and flows 2,350 miles from its northern source at Lake Itasca in Minnesota through the center of the continental United States down to the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans, Louisiana. This type of towboat is easily identified by the two tall steel knees (bumpers) on the square-shaped bow that push against the barges.
