A small town in the province of Cáceres, Trujillo was the birthplace of Francisco Pizarro González, Spanish conquistador, conqueror of the Inca Empire and founder of Lima, capital of Peru. The magnificent bronze statue of Pizarro on horseback is the work of American sculptor Charles Rumsey and was erected in the Plaza Mayor in 1929.
