Light micrograph (LM) of Diazinon (insecticide) crystals. Diazinon is a non-systemic, organophosphate, insecticide used to control residential insects such as, cockroaches, silverfish, ants and fleas. Diazinon is a thiophosphoric acid and kills insects by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme needed for proper nervous system function. Diazinon has a low persistence in soil. The half-life is 2 to 4 weeks. The symptoms associated with diazinon poisoning in humans include weakness, headaches, tightness in the chest, blurred vision, non-reactive pinpoint pupils, salivation, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and slurred speech. In 2004 the EPA made it unlawful to sell diazinon in agricultural products. Magnification: x40 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
