Umbilical vein. Light micrograph of a section through a human umbilical cord showing the umbilical vein. The vein consists of an inner lumen (white) through which blood flows, and a folded inner endothelial layer. Most of the vein consists of several concentric layers of smooth muscle. Around the vein is the jelly-like mucous connective tissue (pale pink) known as Wharton's jelly. The umbilical cord is the attachment connecting the foetus with the placenta, and by which the foetus receives nourishment from the mother's blood and via which waste products are removed.
