The disposition of the infantry for the attack was unique. CompaniesF and G jumped off from a line about a quarter of a mile southwest ofMarcheville. Companies E and H, acting as support and reserve, movedforward from the direction of the town of Saulx. half a mile in the rear ofCompany Fs left flank, leaving that flank uncovered. At the zero hour aheavy fog hung overthis area, enabling theattacking troops to moveforward unseen. As aresult they took the en-emy completely by sur-prise.
