Artist/engraver/cartographer: Jacques Nicholas Bellin. Provenance: The map was extracted from a composite atlas of early 18th century maps, the latest of which was dated c1754. Type: Large antique 18th century atlas map, printed on thick, good quality paper with decorative title cartouche. The map shows the Great Lakes region of North America, along with forts, settlements and missions. Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are shown. European settlements named include the river and port of "Checagou" (Chicago), Philadelphia, New York & Baltimore plus other towns around Chesapeake Bay. In addition to a number of abandoned forts and missions, the map shows the Mission Ste. Marie, Mission S. François Xavier, Fort and Mission St Ignace, Fort Niagara. Many Native American Indian villages are shown
