Bolehill Stones

The area had been quarried from around the thirteenth century, chiefly for millstones, but the industry collapsed due to cheaper foreign imports. In November, 1901 the site was bought by the Derwent Valley Water Board as it could provide large quantities of good quality building stone for the construction of the Howden and Derwent dams.
