Clive Street, Calcutta ( Now Kolkata ), West Bengal, India in 1894
From a portfolio of photographs pub 1894 John L Stoddard (1850-1931) A few years earlier than this photo In 1883, Calcutta had hosted the first national conference of the Indian National Association, the first avowed nationalist organisation in India. Clive Street had been named after Robert Clive who had retaken the city from the Nawab of Bengal in 1757 for the East India Company. Under East India company rule and later that of the British Raj, Kolkata was the capital of British-held territories in India until 1911, when its geographical disadvantages, combined with growing nationalism in Bengal, meant the capital shifted to New Delhi. The city itself is named after The Goddess Kali, Kali-Ghat.
