In the first act, which transpires in the garret home ofLouise, it is disclosed that Louise is in love with Julien, theBohemian poet, whose manner of life does not commend itselfto her parents. He has written to them, but his letter hasnot been acknowledged. Louise informs her lover of this andadvises him to write a second letter, promising to run awaywith him if it is rejected. In the second act Julien among his boon companions inMontmartre meets Louise and inquires the fate of his secondletter. She informs him it is unfavorable. He reminds herof her promise and begs her to fly with him, but she refuses,fearful of the effect it might have upon her father. Thenext scene shows Louise at work with other girls in a sewingroom. In the courtyard below Julien and his comradesserenade her. The girls at first are delighted with theserenade, but at last, getting tired of it, they abuse , overcome by her emotions, pleads illness, leaves theshop, and her companions see her going away with her lover.
