When the vigorous Con-federate attack at Malvern Hill threat-ened the rout of the army, McClellanwas aboard the gunboat Galena, whosearmy signal officer informed him of thesituation through messages flagged fromthe shore. Through information fromthe signal officers directing the fire of theBeet, he was aided in repelling the advancesof the Confederates. The messages ranlike this: Fire one mile to the right.
