Hutchinson's tropical enema (assembled) with its morocco case. This piece is in brass and steel and dates from around 1850. Tropical enemas were so called as they were designed to work without the rubber tubing conventionally used in these devices and which was liable to decompose in tropical climates. Enema procedures involve the evacuation of the lower intestines by the introduction of fluids into the rectum and colon through the anus. This was a common procedure in the nineteenth century for the treatment of general ailments and constipation.
