The characters wbicb separate tbis race from M. punc- tulata are extremely sligbt. They consist in the more olive-yellow shade of the rump, upper tail-coverts, and tail, and the generally more ashy black of the flank-barring, which, moreover, is not so strongly pronounced as in 31. jncnciulata. On the rump the feathers have not the second subterminal dusky bar which is seen in the latter Feather from lower back of M. subundulata (enlarged). M. subundulata is in reality very similar to M. punctidata and intermediate between ihat species and M. nisoria. It differs from the former in having the black barring on the sides of the body much less pronounced, the bars being narrower and more ashy blackish in tint. The shade of yellow over the rump and upper tail-coverts is pale straw-yellow with an olive tinge, and a shade of hoary olive joervades the tail. Of the two forms, M. subundulata approaches nearest to M.
