Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923). 1902 illustration of the French stage and early film actress Sarah Bernhardt in costume. Bernhardt became famous during France's Belle Epoque period and was in demand across Europe and the Americas. After making a name for herself as a serious dramatic actress, she earned the nickname 'The Divine Sarah' and was referred to as 'the most famous actress the world has ever known'. Bernhardt also studied painting and sculpture and is best known for her 1880 Art Noueau decorative bronze inkwell or a self-portrait with bat wings and a fish tail.
