Image captured on November 4, 1918, during World War I. The photo shows a German strong point, taken from a machine gun dugout at Varennes-de-Four-de-Paris Road, west of Varennes-en-Argonne, Meuse, France. It depicts the road and distant hill which the advancing American soldiers passed through. The machine gun nest could cover an area of approximately 150 degrees. 2nd Lieutenant Carl C. Mayhew of the Infantry took the photo. It was approved by the censor, with the exact date of approval unknown. Filed under Subject 28560, with photographer 29560.
