Aeroplanes and tanks in the desert, cooperating withArabs on camels, seemed certainly more romantic than they did 264 THE STORY OF THE GREAT WAR in France or Italy. The campaign was of the older type; therewere never enough troops on either side to make necessary atrench line. Eventually the one great crowning exploit of thecampaign was that in which the British cavalry in force rode aroundthe Turks and caught them in the rear, while AUenbys infantryattacked them in front.
