He next spent two years in Eu-rope. Upon his return the appointment of adjutantgeneral of the army was tendered him by Washing-ton, but declined, Jackson preferring to devote him-self to the practice of his profession until 1796, whenhe accepted from the president the appointment ofsurveyor of the port of Philadelphia. This office heheld until removed by President Jefferson in then began the publication of a daily newspaperin Philadelphia, the Political and CommercialRegister, which was continued till 1815. From1800 till his death he was secretary general of thesociety of the Cincinnati, and at their request pre-pared and pronounced the eulogy on Gen. Washing-ton. Returning to his law practice he became asolicitor of revolutionary pensions. He died in Phil-adelphia Dec. 17, OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY. 275
