Glucose blood test. General prac- tise doctor measures the blood sugar (glucose) level of an elderly male patient. This is a test for diabetes. The patient's finger has been pricked, and a droplet of blood placed on a white chemically coated strip. The strip is then inserted into a digital glucometer to obtain a blood glucose reading. The reading of mmol per litre, seen here, is normal. Diabetes is caused by low levels of the hormone insulin. Without insulin the body's tissues can not take up glucose which can result in serious symptoms. If insulin- dependent diabetes is diagnosed, the patient will require regular insulin injections.
