Portrait of a 23 year old Algonquian man from Virginia wearing a necklace and head ornaments. Algonquian tribes constituted a significant proportion of North American native peoples, before Europeans arrived. They populated much of Canada east of the Rocky Mountains, regions along the Atlantic coast, the mid-west and beyond. This image, an etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677), was published in 1645.
