He soon became prominent and influen-tial in all the deliberations of the senate, and opposedspecial legislation by interposing constitutional objec-tions, bat advocated the passage of the bill givingcriminals the right to testify in their own behalf, sup-ported legislation for a geodetic survey of the state,and delivered eulogies before the senate on the death ofBayard Taylor and Gov. Bigler. In 1883 he was chos-en a member of congress from the sixth Pennsylvaniadistrict, and in 1884 was re-elected by the largestmajority ever given a candidate in that district. Hewas an influential member of the committees on com-merce, weights and measures, and war claims, andnever missed a final vote on any measure before the. house while he was a representative. Mr. Everhartspent his leisure time in diligent study of the bestworks of literature. He published, in 1863, a volumeof Miscellanies, containing interesting accountsof the people and places he visited abroad. In 1867he issued a collection of poems, also his speeches inbook form, and in 1875 he published The FoxChase, a lively and spirited poem, conveying asplendid idea of the noble chase, the scene laid inChester county, Pa., along the historic died Aug. 33, 1888.
