When bent abruptly it almost invariably shows instantly that it is an artificial ex- pedient. When all of the plants at hand are in the specimen sheets, in the manner described, place the empty sheets on top, but with the folded edges in the opposite direction from those containing plants, so that the two piles can be readily separated when the portfolio is next opened. On top of all place the upper cover and tighten firmly with the straps, and you are ready to proceed on your search for more plants. It will be seen that more time is required to manip- ulate the portfolio than the vasculum in the field,.
