What Makes a Radio Beacon Tick. Three banks of storage batteries, resting in water-tight compartments within the buoy, furnish the power for this super-radio transmitter, which sends the necessary impulses to an approaching ship. This radio "set" is contained in the buoy's fourth compartment. The antenna rises like a buggy whip from the top of the buoy's super-structure.
