Fresco in mansion, Shekhawati region, India
The Shekhawati region north of Jaipur is famous for its painted villas or havelis, many of them now dilapidated, built between the 1770s and 1930s by merchants who grew rich on trade through the Thar desert. Sometimes the wall paintings depicted modern colonial era infrastructure such as trains. This painting inside a villa in the town of Mandawa shows an Englishman in his pith helmet.
