The rich giftsof kings and others made the church of Perpetuusvery beautiful. St. Odo, in a sermon on its de-struction by fire, described it as lined with variouscoloured marbles; in one place the walls were redwith Protonis marble, in another white with Parian,in another green with Prasine. This church wasburned by Willicharius. Chlotaire I rebuilt it. TheNormans burned it again in 853 and 903, and soonafter the year 1000 it was rebuilt by Hervey theTreasurer in the form in which it existed to thetime of the Revolution.
