The0Conors, Garrisons, Lincolns, and Bryans havenot sprung from the ranks of noble birth, butfrom the ranks of the people— the plain peo-ple, as Mr. Lincoln called tliem. The man whoaspires to be a leader of the people must knowthe people ; must know their wants and needs ;their modes of thinking and living ; their aspira-tions and hopes ; their economic and politicalconditions ; and he must be in honest sympathywith them. Thrs knowledge and sympathy isnot acquired ; it is largely inherited—the growthof generations, inbred into the warp and woofof a generous nature. Then the product is thegenius of leadership. It is for this reason the public love to know the ancestry, the youth, theprivate life, and the personal characteristics of apublic man.
