An old engraving showing how a Victorian rope-making machine works. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Yarn is made into strands. Three spools of strands (top right) revolve on a common axis on a ‘sun-wheel’. The strands are fed through hollow rotating shaft, twisting the them together. The resulting rope is then wound onto a rotating, tensioned wheel (bottom left).
