All benches to be used for cuttings should be thoroughly cleaned and given a coat of whitewash before they are filled with sand. It is advisable to have the bottom of cutting benches so arranged as to afford ample drain- age, to prevent stagnation, which is very apt to occur where there are im- purities in the sand or water.
