Juan Manuel de Rosas (March 30, 1794 - March 14th, 1877). Conservative Argentine politician, (and dictator), Governor and soldier. Painting by Gaetano Descalzi around 1840. Darwin met General Rosas in Argentina (1830) while conducting extensive land collections during the Voyage of the Beagle. Darwin found him a \man of extraordinary character\" though he found his army a group of villainous bandits. Rosas helped Darwin by giving him horses and letters of safe conduct for the land journey to Buenas Aires. At the time Rosas was engaged in a bloody war with the native Indians who were resisting European settlement. Darwin called it \"a war of extermination\" foreseeing Rosas' inevitable victory, but thought the war would bring benefits in cattle production. Rosas was deposed and exiled in 1852. He became a Southampton farmer and was buried in the cemetery there. He and Darwin met as old men."
