He bequeathed it to his wife Mercy with remainder to his son Thomas Bownest,'* who was in possession in 1668.'' His son Thomas sold the estate in 1687 to William Allen ^^ of Great Hadham. From his son Thomas it was purchased in 1714 by the governors of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, West Smithfield," in whom it is still vested.
