The Sola is a traditional relay race in the Zurich area which is organized by the academic sports association Zurich and was first held in 1974. It covers a distance of over 100 km and is divided into 14 individual tracks. With over 600 teams participating each year, the Sola is the largest academic sports event in Switzerland. During its first year in Zurich, the Aebersold lab set up a running team and hit rank 209 out of 643 on April 23, 2005. History of the Sola The idea originated in Sweden, where in 1968, students from the university of Goeteborg organized a relay race from Goeteborg to Karlstad. The total distance of 259 km was divided into 30 tracks and was run during the night (!). In the early morning, the runners approached the 'sun city' Karlstad and its Sola statue in the rising sun (swedish 'sol') The historic character Sola (her real name was Eva Lisa Holtz) was an innkeeper in Karlstad in the 18th century, and her statue is a landmark of the town ().
