An old engraving of a Victorian machine for making combined wire and wood fencing in the 1800s. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The timber battens were inserted between the twin wires and the wires pulled tight around the wood. This hurdle or woven type of fencing was easily cut to length, very transportable and flexible, making it ideal for uneven ground.
