An old engraving of the large pipes in the underground service tunnels, sewers or subways below London, England, UK in the late 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Large tunnels like this would include pipes for gas, water supply and sewerage – and later sometimes the electrical supply. Here large iron pipes are used to carry water and effluent in the brick-lined, paved, semi-circular ‘streets’. Inspections were carried out as leaks were common. Note the rails in the bottom image – materials and tools for repairs could be hauled in small ‘railway’ trucks.
